The Rock Creek Gate Project.
This project is an ongoing work of love (and labour!). We live across the street from a park that used to be a wild place through which ran Rock Creek. It was an ecosystem teaming with life: ravens, kingfishers, arbutus tress, salmon, ferns, skunk cabbage.... With enough encouragement, this place might one day be "re-wilded". Until that time, our gate will be a reminder of what once was, and what could be again.
A Hipster Alphabet.
'A' is for Alligator, 'B' is for Bear... How about 'C' is for Cycling Cephalopod? Or 'K' is for Kombucha-Brewing Koala?! This series has been a absolute alliteration adventure, and I look forward to drawing more hip herbivores, herpetofauna, hermaphrodites... over the coming years.
Prior Snowboard Topsheet Design.
A few years' back (2018/19) I submitted this snowboard topsheet design to the Prior Snowboards annual topsheet competition. My design depicts some of the unappreciated, "unsung" fauna and flora of the Sea to Sky Region. I was selected as a finalist, but didn't win. Nonetheless, this illustration represents a milestone of sorts - my first (and to date only) piece featured in an art show. Perhaps more art shows are in my future?
Dogfish Illustrations.
In 2022 I was lucky enough to work on some scientific illustrations of two newly-discovered dogfishes for some elasmobranch researchers at Florida State University and the University of West Florida. More specifically (for you Squalus nerds out there!), I got to draw the Hawaiian spurdog (Squalus hawaiiensis) (see here) and the Gulf dogfish.
Inktober.
Inktober is a global drawing challenge initiated in 2009 and held every October - 31 days, 31 drawings! Inspired by official prompt words, artists practice their inking (and general artistry) skills and develop positive drawing habits. Every year I dabble in Inktober, alternately feeling guilty for not doing more and proud of myself for doing any drawing at all!
Whale Interpretive Centre Exhibit Illustrations.
A formative Summer job of mine when I was an undergrad student was that of inaugural Interpreter for a marine mammal centre (then called 'The Bones Project') in the small coastal town of Telegraph Cove, BC. With little by way of a job description, I took it upon myself to illustrate interpretive signs to accompany the skeleton displays that I spent the rest of my time articulating.
Threatened Species Colouring Sheets.
I have always worked illustration into my jobs, and colouring sheets have become a bit of a recurring passion project. Raising awareness of the plight of threatened species is key to their survival, as is a greater appreciation for our wild species and spaces. (And as a bonus, I get to thoroughly nerd out making these sheets, all the while picturing youngsters colouring otter noses and basking shark gill rakers).
Hakai Institute Colouring Sheets.
Curious about hydrothermal vents? What about bioluminescence? I had the recent (2023/24) privilege of illustrating some colouring sheets to accompany the Hakai Institute's educational YouTube video series that explores the coastal margin of the Pacific Northwest. Check out Hakai's videos here.
Salish Sea 'Creature Feature' Colouring Sheets.
The Salish Sea is one of the world's largest and biologically rich inland seas. Its coastline length is 7,470 km, it contains 419 islands, its maximum depth is 650 m, and it is home to an estimated 37 species of mammals, 172 species of birds, 253 species of fish, and more than 3,000 species of invertebrates. Doodles.
Here are some illustrations done for the pure joy of doodling. I'm still not sure which side of my brain is dominant, but I do know that time spent with pen-in-hand is time spent nurturing an important part of myself. Like for Maurice Sendak, '[doodling] is my way of stirring up my imagination to see what I find hidden in my head'.
